Here's another few paragraphs about my thoughts regarding the announced ruleset changes for Series 10 — a three-month period of play, running from the start of August to the end of October.
Let's start with the unambiguously positive here. I count myself among those who have been calling for a non-Dynamax ruleset since it became immediately evident upon launch what a misstep that mechanic was compared to the 9 or so years of preceding ranked singles history. And here's us getting a full three months without that most unfortunate of generational gimmicks. So what's not to like?
Well, alas, we don't seem to be able to get anything truly glorious (try "good", or merely "decent", depending on your base level of cynicism regarding the state of the franchise) without a potentially fatal dose of bad sprinkled in there somewhere — this is competitive pokemon, after all. So, yes, here we are again, another ubers-format running for three months.
And if you thought dealing with Zacian was a problem in Series 8, how about trying to deal with it and things like Calyrex-S in singles without access to Dynamax bulk. I realize I probably sound more than slightly peeved right now, but Series 8 was — objectively — not good, and it's hard to stay positive when what you have to look forward to is more of the same — if not worse.
I guess losing a full third of the entire playerbase the last time around was not a learning experience. Even if these formats were planned years in advance, and merely rolled out more or less in an automated fashion, one would think some allowance would be made for course corrections along the way when you so precipitously hasten the natural decline of your competitive formats for this generation.
To conclude this entry, I should mention that I will be playing in the Water Paradise weekender tournament (16-18 Jul), as well as trying to do a ladder push with jank for the end of the month that will ideally end in the high 1800s to low 1900s.
