Tox’s BSS blog

Beclowning myself in ranked singles since 2018.

Battle Stadium Singles blog — BSS Tools & Resources (January 2023 update)

Greetings, fellow humans. As promised, this is my first summary of the major resources I try to make use of for ranked singles on console in generation 9. It goes without saying that virtually all relevant material below is in Japanese, competitive pokemon in the rest of the world being dominated by the smogon-formats and the official doubles tournament circuit.

1) Tools for laddering

Damage calculators and usage data are essential for team-building, but can also be utilized during the process of laddering.

Unfortunately, without HOME Battle Data, none of the usual providers of statistics are up, but I will list them nevertheless for when backend data does eventually become available.

1.1 Damage Calculators

Import your team from the Showdown team-builder and save it to run calculations with and against.

NCP VGC calculator

Damage values are preset to doubles, has irrelevant doubles sets featured on it, but at least has dark mode.

Site: https://nerd-of-now.github.io/NCP-VGC-Damage-Calculator/

Showdown calculator

Levels preset to 100, painful plain white eyesore of a page (just like this blog on mobile, zing!).

Site: https://calc.pokemonshowdown.com/

1.2  Usage Stats

As noted above, without HOME Battle Data, we have no statistics as of the initial publication of this entry, and can't even see player Elo-rankings. This is promised to be rectified "early 2023".

Pokemoem

Last generation, pokemoem was the best English-language site for console usage stats.

Site: https://pokemoem.com/pokedex

Twitter: https://twitter.com/JustBestRyuna

Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/ryunapoke

Pokedb.tokyo

Pokedb has been the most comprehensive Japanese-language statistics page since generation 7 (gen 7 & 8: https://usum.pokedb.tokyo/https://swsh.pokedb.tokyo/).

Site: https://sv.pokedb.tokyo/

Twitter: https://twitter.com/pokedb_tokyo

Pikalytics

Pikalytics is more focused on VGC and has statistics for smogon-formats, but does BSS-coverage, as well.

Site: https://www.pikalytics.com/

Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pikalytics

2) Metagame resources

This section contains links to the main team and blog aggregators, and various other resources for BSS.

Rotoportal

Rotoportal came up towards the end of generation 8, and is currently the most comprehensive blog aggregator, even boasting a search tool, like the still-dormant nouthuca did.

Site: https://www.rotoportal.com/roto/

Twitter: https://twitter.com/rotoportal

Pokearticle

Pokearticle is another blog aggregator. Because of its lack of features and crowdsourced link collection effort, it has blogs and battle reports up faster than Rotoportal does at the conclusion of a ladder season.

Site: https://poke-article.com

Twitter: https://twitter.com/pokearticle_com

Showdown

The only game in town regarding battle simulators, a useful tool for team-building and practice before going on the real ladder.

Site: https://pokemonshowdown.com/

Smogon-affiliated resources

English-language resources for BSS are effectively non-existent outside the smogon community.
